Name:
Sara
Age:
23

Drug of Choice:
  Klonopin, adderall

How did you become addicted?
My junior year of college I went to a doctor for ADD medication, and he also gave me an anti-anxiety med because the stimulant medication I was already abusing for ADD gave me horrible anxiety and insomia. I was visiting from out of state, but this doctor gave me a year worth of refills for klonopin. I started mixing it with alcohol and the combo felt so good.

Your turning point? (What made you choose recovery?)
I was having a hard time remembering things. I would get really drunk and party with friends, but I was so messed up that I was falling over after having 3 or 4 drinks. I also noticed that I could not remember things when I was on the drug especially mixed with alcohol.Additionally, I was really depressed. My friend who is in grad school for counseling told me that my severe depression was drug related.

Tell us about your recovery.
I decided to stop. I didn't want to be on a rollercoaster anymore. I wanted to be able to remember things. I still can't remember superbowl last year and other various things that I should be able to remember. I have been clean for 1 month and 4 days. I look forward to celebrating my 5th 6th and 7th years of independence from drugs.

Your advice to others?
You can do anything if you put your mind to it. Don't let anyone tell you that you need something that you don't have to recover. Don't try to do it alone if you need help. Listen to the voice inside of you that knows what is right. Listen and muster the courage to follow it. This is the one life you have, How do you want to spend it?
